Building a Successful Team: Setting goals in 5 simple steps

Leadership is the method of influencing behavior towards the goal you want. As a leader, one of your main efforts is to work with your team to achieve goals. This is a relatively simple process that includes five keystrokes.

1. Clearly define the goals for your team. The first step in leading each team is to identify goals. To increase the chance of team success, you should use the SMART goal. Specifically, each goal must have the following characteristics:

* Specific – The goal is precise and stated in terms.

* Measurable – It will be easy to determine whether the goal has been achieved.

* Achievable

* Important – The goal is bound to the needs of the organization.

* Time Tied – The goal has an identifiable period to complete.

2. The goal is high, but it is realistic and slow. Verify that each team member is clear about the goal. When SMART goals have been identified, make sure each member is clear about those goals. You can do this by facilitating your attention to the goal. At a team meeting, each person must give a 3 "x 5" index card and ask them to answer the following question, "What is our most important goal for the next 6 months?" Collect the games and register each statement on a tab. If the members of the group are on the same page, you will see great consistency in their responses. If you see many different perspectives, you need to do a better job to share goals.

3. Help each team member to explain his role in relation to the team's goals. When team goals are established and shared, it is common for some members to be uncertain about their role in relation to these goals. Everyone has a special job to do, but some people can not see the relationship between their work and to achieve the goals of the team. In such cases, it is helpful to work with staff individually so that they are clear about the importance of their work and how they relate to the team's goals and priorities. This will help each team member to feel like he / she is an important participant in the team's success.

4. Continuously convey the most important priority to team members . In addition to ensuring that everyone is aware of the team's goals, the leader must constantly identify the team's most important priorities and ensure that each member is clear about the priorities. This can be done by using a variation of the role described above. At the team meeting, give each person 3 "x 5" index cards and ask them to answer the following question, "What are our 3 most important priorities for the next 6 months?" Once again you collect the cards and collect information on tabs. If team members are on the same page, you will see great consistency in their responses. 5. When prioritization changes, let team members know why. One of the biggest reasons why the team members get confused about goals and priorities is to fail a part of leaders to share changes in priorities and analyze the reasons for these changes. Given the fast and ever changing environment we work in, it is not unusual to change the team's priorities. Members will be able to handle these changes if you notify them in a timely manner. Specifically, when the team needs to change goals and / or priorities, do the following:

* Join members to discuss the change and answer any questions they may have.

* Inform team members for reasons

* Explain how the change will affect working methods and products.

* Explain what changes team members need to do to meet new goals and priorities.

* Follow-up to ensure that each team member is cleared of changes.
